Senigallia 1 marengo 1972

Senigallia is a port town of about 45,000 inhabitants on Italy’s Adriatic coast.

It was founded in the 4th century B.C. by the Gallic tribe of the Senones and became the first Roman colony on the Adriatic shore. A colony was founded there by the Romans after their victory over the Senones, before 280 B.C. Subsequently it was destroyed by Pompey in 82 B.C. and laid waste for some time.

Senigallia was again fortified by the Bizantine Imperium but ravaged by the Lombards in the 8th century and by the Saracens in the 9th.

In the 13th century, and repeatedly afterwards, Senigallia held one of the largest fairs in Italy, when Sergius, count of Senigallia, received certain relics of Mary Magdalene from the count of Marseilles. This was a famous fair visited by merchants from Germany, France, Austria, Switzzerland and especially Spain.

Senigallia was chosen by Dante as the typical instance of a ruined city, after the destruction of the city by the Guelphs and Ghibelline wars between the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. In the 15th century it was captured and recaptured again and again by the Malatesta and their opponents.

After 1624 it formed part of the Papal State’s province of Urbino.

Nowadays Senigallia is one of the most famous seaside resorts of the region, attracting tourist from all over Europe, especially from Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.

Stresa is a small town of only about 5,000 inhabitants on the shores of the Lake Maggiore in the region of Piedmont, in Nothern Italy.

In the 15th century it grew into a fishing community and owed feudal allegiance to the Visconti family. It subsequently came under the control of the Borromeo family.

For centuries Stresa has been a popular retreat for Europe's aristocrats, who have endowed the town with a number of villas. Tourism increased substantially after tunneling of the Simplon Pass allowed train service from north of the Alps to pass through Stresa, in 1906.

One famous visitor in 1948 was Ernest Hemingway who set part of his novel Farewell to Arms in the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees. In 2002 Stresa hosted the 10th International Hemingway Conference.

Stresa is also known for hosting two important political conferences in the 20th century. In 1935, representatives from the United Kingdom, Italy and France met in Stresa and decided to form the Stresa front to combat and contain Nazi Germany and re-affirm the Treaty of Locarno. In 1958, the foundations for what was later to become the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Economic Community were laid down in Stresa.

Alghero is a small town in the province of Sassari in northwestern Sardinia in Italy.

The town of Alghero has been inhabited since pre-historic times. In modern times, Alghero was conquered and inhabited by Catalano-Aragonese rulers from 1353 and subsequently by the Spaniards until the early 18th century.

Following the departure of the Spanish occupants, the island of Sardinia was handed over to the Kingdom of Piedmont and later unified with the rest of Italy in the mid 1800s.

Circa 22% of the population of Alghero speaks a Catalan dialect, introduced when the Catalan invaders repopulated the town after capturing it from the Genoese in the 14th century. It is believed that 90% of the inhabitants of the city have some understanding of this dialect.

Alghero is now a town of only 42,000 inhabitants and it is very popular tourist destination.

Sorrento is a small town in Campania, southern Italy.

Sorrento has had an intense history during the Middle Ages. It was conquered and ruled by the Western Romans Empire, by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantium Empire and attacked by the Lombards, the Amalfitani and the Saracens. It was later established as an independent duchy and became part of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1133 when it was conquered by the Norman Roger II of Hauteville.

Sorrento, as part of the Kingdom of Sicily, was ruled by the Crown of Aragon from 1409 until 1516. Subsequently, it was part of the Kingdom of Spain until 1707. The Spaniards would resume its control of Sorrento in 1735 (following a brief annexation of the town to the Houses of Savoy and Habsburg), with the King Charles VII of Naples and Sicily (the son of Philip V of Spain) as the town’s ultimate ruler.

In 1861 Sorrento was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy.

In the following years it confirmed and increased its status of one of the most renowned tourist destinations of Italy, a trend which continued into the 20th Century.
