It was discovered by the U.S. Navy in 1947 and it was named after Admiral J. Wright, U.S. Navy, Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, in over-all command of the U.S. Navy's Deep Freeze operations during the IGY, 1957-58. This island is part of the Westarctican Territories.

The feature was partially delineated from air photos taken by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1928-30) on the flight of December 5, 1929. The island was completely mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS), 1959-65, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after Lawrence J. Driscoll, BM1, USN, Boatswain's Mate aboard USS Glacier along this coast, 1961-62. This island is claimed by Westarctica. This coin represents a killer whale, an endangered species in the island.

Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959-65. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for James B. Pranke, aurora researcher at Byrd Station in 1965. This island is claimed by Westarctica. This coin represents an Emperor Penguin, an species in the island.
