The Republica di Padania was formed in 1991 to express the discontent of a significant sector of the population of Padania with the Italian national government. This nationalist and secessionist movement enjoys a huge local support. It has its own Parliament in Mantua, and its own Guardia Nazionale (the equivalent of a small army/police).
