Vlaanderen (Flanders) comprises the Dutch-speaking areas of Belgium. In
that country, the Flemish people are fiercely nationalistic in their
political/sociological struggles regarding emancipation; they have
their own parliament, government, and administration/institutions, all
based in Brussels. Coins were issued for Vlaanderen from 1985-87. The
coins were distributed by a Flemish secessionist organization and were
used in several stores and markets of the region. It was a great
success. But the Belgian Minister of Finances at that time, who was a
French-speaking politician, forbade the coins.
