Bassas da India 100 francs 2012 (African Women)

In stock

10.00

Bassas da India is an uninhabited, roughly circular atoll that is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. The Bassas da India was first recorded by Portuguese explorers in the early sixteenth century as the "Baixo da Judia" ("Jewess Shoals"). The Judia ("Jewess", for the ancestry of its owner Fernão de Loronha) was the Portuguese ship that discovered the feature by running aground on it in 1506. The name became "Bassas da India" due to transcription errors by cartographers.

It is located in the southern Mozambique Channel, about halfway between Mozambique and Madagascar (about 385 km further east) and around 110 km northwest of Europa Island. The rim of the atoll averages around 100 m in width and encloses a shallow lagoon of depth no greater than 15 m. Overall, the atoll is about 10 km in diameter, rising steeply from the seabed 3000 m below to encircle an area of 80 km2 .

The atoll consists of ten barren rocky islets, with no vegetation, totalling 0.2 km² in area.

This issue is part of a series of coins dedicated to French Overseas Departments and Territories.

The Lakota, a name that means “feeling affection, friendly, united, allied”, are a Native American tribe. They are the western-most of the three Sioux-language groups and occupy lands in North and South Dakota. The tribe is notable for its members Sitting Bull of the Hunk papa band and Crazy Horse of the Oglala band, who led their people during years of resistance to United States government policies.

Legally and by treaty they are a semi-autonomous “nation” within the United States. In 2007, the Lakota Nation withdrew from all treaties with the United States in a decision to declare their sovereignty and independence. Following their formal secession, the free and independent Nation of Lakota launched the Free Lakota Bank in 2008.

The Lakota have been using their own coins since 2008. Across the great Lakota land, thousands of communities and merchants participate in their system of trade. The Lakota leadership claims to use their new monetary system to help restore wealth and prosperity to their people.

The Cape Cod is a cape in the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts, in the Northeastern United States. Cape Cod has been the home of the Wampanoag tribe of Native American people for many centuries.

This coin is the official currency of the Cape Cod C Shell Community Barter, a recently established barter community dedicated to keeping wealth within the community. The Cape Cod C Shell can be used by anyone to purchase goods and services from any merchant in the C Shell community.

The Cape Cod C Shells medallions represent the Quahog clam shell, a traditional form of currency previously used by Indian tribes who lived around the Eastern seaboard. The shell was cut and polished into pieces called Wampum and these pieces were accepted as currency.

The obverse features a fine rendition of the Quahog clam shell. On the reverse, a geographic outline of Cape Cod Bay partially encompassed by the uniquely labeled marketplace value “Two Shells”.

Wallis & Futuna Island 2011, 200 francs

Wallis and Futuna, officially the Territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands, is a Polynesian French island territory in the South Pacific between Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

Its land area is 264 km2 with a population of about 15,000. Mata-Utu is the capital and biggest city. The territory is made up of three main volcanic tropical islands along with a number of tiny islets (up to 20), and is split into two island groups that lie about 260 km apart, namely Wallis Islands (Uvea) in the northeast, and Futuna Islands (Hoorn Islands) in the southwest, including Futuna Island proper and the mostly uninhabited Alofi Island (the population of Alofi was reportedly eaten by the cannibal people of Futuna in one single raid in the 19th century).

The territory is divided into three traditional kingdoms; Uvea, on the island of Wallis, Sigave, on the western part of the island of Futuna, and Alo, on the island of Alofi and on the eastern part of the island of Futuna.

Although the Dutch and the British were the European discoverers of the islands in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was the French who were the first Europeans to settle in the territory, with the arrival of French missionaries in 1837, who converted the population to Roman Catholicism.

On 5 April 1842, the missionaries asked for the protection of France after the rebellion of a part of the local population. On 5 April 1887, the queen of Uvea (on the island of Wallis) signed a treaty officially establishing a French protectorate. In 1917, the three traditional kingdoms were annexed to France and turned into the Colony of Wallis and Futuna, still under the authority of the Colony of New Caledonia. In 1959, the inhabitants of the islands voted to become a French overseas territory, effective in 1961, thus ending their subordination to New Caledonia.

Between 1961 and 2003, it had the status of a French overseas territory. Since 2003 Wallis and Futuna has been a French overseas collectivity.

There are 3 different coins from Wallis & Futuna Islands:

- 100 francs Brass
