The Republica di Padania was formed in 1991 to express the discontent of a significant sector of the population of Padania with the Italian national government. The Republica du Nord (also known as Lega Nord) was founded by Umberto Bossi in 1990. It is formed by an alliance of town-based leagues that demand the unification of the North of Italy and its disassociation from the rest of the country. This nationalist republic has a huge popular support in the North of Italy, and his political arm plays a very active role in both the local and national government and it even served briefly in the coalition government of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Tatarstan is a federal subject of the Russian Federation. The Republic is located in the center of the East European Plain, approximately 800 kilometers east of Moscow. It lies between the Volga River and the Kama River, and extends east to the Ural mountains. The Tatarstan coins circulated in the early 90s due to the shortage of coins in the Republic.

Coins were issued for Vlaanderen from 1985-87. The coins were distributed by a Flemish secessionist organization and were used in several stores and markets of the region. It was a great success. But the Belgian Minister of Finances at that time, who was a French-speaking politician, forbade the coins.

The Republic of South Ossetia is a de facto independent republic that controls the region of the same name in the Republic Georgia. The government of the RSO is not recognised by any country or international organisation. The de facto independent republic governed by the secessionist government has held two independence referendums in 1992 and 2006. In both referendums the South-Ossetians declared their intentions to become an independent nation, but they were not recognized by the international community as valid.

The Republic of Cabinda, currently occupied by Angola, traces its claims to self-sovereignty to its initial status as a Portuguese protectorate, known as the Portuguese Congo. This protectorate had a separate history and legal status from that of the much larger Portuguese West Africa, dating to its inception on 19 September 1883 and confirmed by the Treaty of Simulambuco and the Berlin Conference in 1885. Its closest political predecessor was the iron age N'goyo kingdom, which sought voluntarily incorporation into the Portuguese Empire as a way of obtaining protection from hostile neighboring states. This coin issue was not authorized by the Cabindan Government.
